Second Life: The Show Must Go Online on Pitchfork Media (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/columns/get-that-out-of-your-mouth/06-04-21.shtml)
When Astrin Few-- real name, Sam Hokin-- started performing for other players in the online world of Second Life, nobody could hear his guitar. As Few recalls, "People would see you sitting there with a guitar and they'd say, 'Oh, that's a nice guitar.' And you'd tell them, 'Go to your browser and load the URL [for my audio stream]'-- and by then you'd lost their attention."
That was back in May 2004. But about a month later, Linden Labs-- the team behind Second Life-- brought music fully into the game. They added support for streaming audio, and today, you can walk around this three-dimensional virtual world and hear DJs spinning records at clubs, radios humming from people's houses, and more and more often, live performers who play to a crowd of listeners physically seated all over the world.
